BIOGRAPHY: Augustus Simeon remained at home until his parent's deaths. In the early years he attended the district schools, and afterward the graded schools of New Philadelphia and Salem. He embarked in the teacher's profession, which he followed sixteen winters, and, holding a certificate of the highest grade has made the profession a success. He owned 1,000 acres of land, 600 acres being improved. He was a township trustee, County Commissioner, and a State Representative in 1895. He and his wife both belonged to the United Brethren Church. 24
Augustus, like his father and grandfather, was a soil conservationist, and in his positions of responsibilities, "tried to influence many children and adults to think of soil conservation and forestry as important and necessary to the continued prosperity of their community and state.47
1914 OLD SETTLERS: On 17 Apr 1914 Lewis N Smith, E Hicks Trueblood, and Augustus S Garriott, the surviving members of the "Old Settler's Meetings," that began in 1897, called for reorganization of the group and created the Washington County Historical Society. 42
1921 OBITUARY: On 13 Apr 1921 our venerable friend and time honored citizen, Augustus S Garriott answered the final summons and passed over into the Great Beyond.
He was a man of strong personality, general and courteous, earnest in all of his efforts in life, a man of great usefulness in the neighborhood, in the church and in educational interests and having a personal concern in public affairs both local and national.
He was a member and loyal supporter of the Old Settlers Committee and the Washington County Historical Society, always manifesting a deep interest in things that pertained to the societies welfare. After he became physically unable to attend the meeting he was made an honorary member for life.
In the ending of his quiet useful life we hereby resolve that we will ever cherish the memory of his manly virtues and his high ideals of citizenship as exemplified in his daily life.
Martha's parents John Densford and Jane Lee were married in 1846 and had the following five children: Martha; Sarah; Westley; William W [b. 4 May 1861] who married Alice Williams on 24 Nov 1884, a native of Jackson Co, IN; and James.
1897 DEATH: Amos Milton III Garriott remained at the family home in Washington County, Indiana assisting his father on the farm. In the fall of 1896 he went to California for his health where he died of "lung trouble" at the age of 23.
