1990 BIOGRAPHY/OBITUARY: Russell "Russ" Albert Garriott (was) considered by many to be the greatest track and field athlete to come out of Hobart High School. Owned more than a dozen Indiana prep records in the shot-put when he graduated in 1956. He was 6'-6" and weighed 360 pounds when he graduated. Won the state shot-put championship his junior and senior years. The former Brickie also set HHS record of 59'-9 1/2"in the shot-put in 1956. That record still stands, and today it is the longest standing track record in Hobart High track annals. It was also the all time shot-put record in the state of Indiana. It broke the Hoosier record toss of 57'- 11 1/2" set in 1948 by Carol Shields. Former track and cross country coach Frank Kurth, Carol Shields and Russ were inducted into the Hoosier track hall of fame in 1979. On his way to the championship he topped other area competitors like Alex Karras and Fred "the Hammer" Williamson. Karras and Williamson went on to pro football careers.
After graduating from Hobart High School, Russ attended the University of Kansas on an athletic scholarship. Another king-size athlete, Wilt Chamberlain, who went on to fame as a player in the National Basketball Association, was leaving UK when Russ arrived. The university gave Chamberlain's 9' by 4' bed to Russ. In his first year of competition at Kansas, he set a school freshman record for the shot-put and won the freshman Big Eight shot-put title. He was on his way to becoming a world-class shot-putter when he damaged ligaments in both knees in a weight lifting mishap, which ended his career.
He was very active in Hobart Girls Softball, years before Hobart High School put a girls softball team on the field. Russ was a coach in the youth softball program. He was a supervisor for Northern Indiana Public Service (NIPSCO). He was a resident for forty-four years. He was a Master Mason in ML McCelland Lodge #357, F&AM in Hobart, Indiana. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite in the South Bend Consistory. Russel died Tuesday, September 18, 1990. Funeral services were September 21, 1990 at Burns Funeral Home with Rev Merle L Bartels officiating. Interment in Calumet Park Cemetery.
