2017 OBITUARY: Douglas Edward Girard, 48 (grandson of Orabelle and Herbert), died Aug 26 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family and closest friends. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct 14, from 11 am to 1:30 pm at Good Shepard United Methodist Church, Roscommon, with Pastor Jim Noggle officiating. A Celebration of life will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Roscommon, Oct 14, beginning at 2:30 pm. Officiating will be family and friends, who will share food, music and stories about his life. Memorial contributions may be made to family or the Mastocytosis Society or the Leukemia Research Foundation.
He was diagnosed with ALM/Severe Mastocytosis on his 40th birthday. He went through chemo treatments and repeated testing of the mastocytosis, as it is untreatable. He went into remission for seven years, but the leukemia came back and he underwent more rounds of chemo. When these were unsuccessful and a bone marroe transplant was not a viable option, he chose to stop all treatment.
He was born Jan 18 1969, in Jacksonville, FL, to Ronald F and Phyllis J (Miller) Girard. He was Married twice, the first time to Sandra Johnson Jul 3, 1993, and he later married Jeannie Argue of Grayling, but was unmarried at the time of his death. Mr Girard had various occupations, but last worked as a driver for Frito Lay for 10 years, until he was diagnosed.
His greatest accomplishment was in the hundreds of friends he made over the years, from his school days until he died. He never met a stranger, he never forgot a face and he could not travel anywhere in the US without running into people he knew. It was truly his greatest achievement. His friends provided some of the greatest support during the times when he was going through the numerous treatments.
He belonged to a group of boaters and people who frequented Higgins Lake. He spent every weekend of every summer on the lake. He loved to go to AuSable River Canoe Marathon and other social activities on the lake. He spent the last few winters in Arizona living with friends because the Arizona heat was the only thing that helped with his bone pain from the mastocytosis.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Phyllis J (Miller) Girard, in 1979; his grandmother, Eleanor L (Garriott) Miller, in 1997; grandfather, Harold E Miller, in 1984; uncle, Doug Miller, in 1997; aunt, Judith (Miller) Simpson, in 2013; and cousin, James M Eckert, in 2011.
Surviving Mr Girard are his children, Sarah M (Tyler Fowler) Girard of Roscommon (who is currently carrying his first grandchild); father, Ronald Girard of Nevada; sisters, Lisa Girard of Higgins Lake, Roberta (Eckert) Chrispell of Houghton Lake, Ann Allison of Lansing and Heather (Mark) Kruckenberg of Pinckney; brother, Raymond (Kristie) Miller of Livonia; aunt, Marilyn Allison of Houghton Lake; nieces and nephews, Caeleigh Girard, Tristan Chrispell, Brandon Chrispell, Alexa Allison and Kate Miller; and many close friends of more than 40 years who are considered family, as well as numerous friends of many years who loved him beyond measure – this was his legacy.
