09--GARNET MARIE SMILEY [b. 15 Jan 1922, Trenton, Grundy Co, MO]. Garnet 1st married James "Junior" A HANCOCK [d. 1981, Detroit, Wayne Co, MI] in 1939/40, he was in the US Navy, they divorced. He took their two children away from Garnet. She was not reunited with them again until they were adults.

MILITARY: 23 Cecil enlisted in the army on 26 Jun 1918 [US 3.083.858] at Trenton, Grundy Co, MO, and was honorably discharged on 17 Jul 1919, Camp Taylor, KY. He was a corporal in the 526 Motor Transport Corps, stationed in Lyon, France. From his pension application file he appeared to have ridden a motorcycle in the performance of his duties.
PENSION: 23 Cecil applied for a pension [claim C1.216.147] claiming disability by motorcycle in April 1919 causing appendicitis for which he received treatment at the Base Hospital in Lyon, France. An appendectomy was performed in Trenton, MO, after discharge from the army. He received a 25% disability pension in 1930. His VA medical evaluation in Feb 1964 states he, "Worked for the St Louis Arsenal until 1959 for 15 years, before that had worked for Ford in Detroit for five years. He worked out here [Sun Valley, CA] for the Kenskill Trailer Company as a foreman for five years, and hasn't been able to go back to work since May 1963." The VA rated him totally disabled in Feb 1964, at the age of 64.
BIOGRAPHY: "We owned a farm in Wright City, MO where I grew up. Everything started to go bad a few years after the Korean War. Dad leased out his fields and worked at the McQuaw Norris Plant in St Louis, where they made bullets for the big guns. The plant shut down and we moved to California." [Cecilia Ann Smiley] 6
The Franks men in Haddie's family were Pennsylvania coal miners, or "coal pickers." The Worrell family came to the United States from Ireland. [Cecilia Ann Smiley]
