      CENSUS:
     1930 Copeland, Gray Co, KS census: has James Hines 28, b. OK, Laborer-General Farm; Florence Hines 24, b. KS; and Joan Hines 4-1/12, b. OK.

     BIOGRAPHY: Athel's mother, Susanna, divorced Doc Martin Garriott and married Otto Hinds on 4 Jul 1904-- Athel was three years old. Susanna and Otto had two children: Iona Catherin Hines, who died when she was nine, and Johnnie Clayton Hines [b. 1 Nov 1910; d. 16 Jun 1937, bur. Copeland, KS- age 26].

     NAME CHANGE: After his mother's second marriage, Athel Leonard changed his name to James Leonard Hinds. One account has Athel Leonard or James Leonard being born in a tent on the town square in Berlin, Roger Mills Co, OK instead of in Mercer Co, MO.
