BIOGRAPHY: Eugene and Ruth moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1954. Eugene was forced to leave the farm after developing allergies from grain dust. They purchased 10 acres a few miles outside of town, which fortunately turned out to be at that time the most popular area in Sarasota. Large subdivisions built on both sides of them and a Big South Gate Subdivision and South Gate Shopping Center opened within two miles of their property. It was the second Shopping Center in Sarasota. These two were the only Shopping Centers within 75 miles.
Eugene was active with excavating. Operating a dragline he was privileged to place the Ringling Brother's Circus Wagon into the Circus Hall of Fame. He also put the tall steeple on top of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Sarasota.
The Paynes were active in helping the Sarasota District in forming a new Methodist Church in the area where they lived, St John's United Methodist.
