2009 OBITUARY: Phyllis Dunsmoor. Phyllis passed away peacefully at her home in Wheatridge after a courageous battle with emphysema. Born to Alvin Darwin Woodcock and Eva Vernee (Randolph) Woodcock Abrams in Yuma, CO, Phyllis loved to roller skate with her sister, Joyce near their Denver home. After kindergarten at Englewood grade school, Phyllis and Joyce enjoyed a happy childhood with their loving mother, a Christian woman gifted to teach and educated to do so at the University of Northern Colorado. Friends knew Phyllis' momma as "Teacher", because she touched so many lives as an educator in Colorado. That life of service included the contract serving the Prairie Center School in Kiowa County, CO. There, Phyllis and Joyce lived in the teacherage with their momma. Along with all the other children of the area, Phyllis and Joyce were pupils at the country school where "Teacher" directed every aspect of their educational experience. The county seat, Eads, hosted the nearest post office, cafe, and cinema. Phyllis and Joyce grew up together with cherished memories formed in that rustic community of ranchers and farmers. Phyllis liked to joke and was always ready with puns and one-liners sharpened by her sardonic wit. While working for the US post office, Phyllis married a charming co-worker, Elmer Dunsmoor, a former US Army officer. Elmer and Phyllis completed their postal careers and retired to Clovis NM, chosen for fresh air, tranquility, and perfect soil for Phyllis to garden.
Elmer was living happily with Phyllis in Clovis when he passed away. Widowed in her golden years, Phyllis relocated to Colorado to be closer to her children and her beloved sister Joyce. Recreation for Phyllis was playing Scrabble and Boggle, applying her quick wit and lifelong experience with crossword puzzles to win many games. Now enjoying her Christian reward, Phyllis is survived by children, all in Colorado: CARLA Sue (Doug) Goodrich of Thornton, Dennis WADE (Sharlene) Schneiderwent of Denver, JEF Jefry Jon Mumford (Roice) of Lamar, three grandchildren, her sister, Helen JOYCE (Woodcock) Abrams of Lamar, and her half brother Ted Abrams of Cary, NC. The family is grateful for the affection already shown. Kind words for Phyllis from friends can be forwarded to Joyce in Lamar, CO.
