2002 OBITUARY: Son of Alexander Louis and Anna Virginia Blackburn. Husband to Roberta Jean Williams. Wilbur "Bill" Louis, 89, Florence farmer, died March 18, 2002. Services were held Saturday afternoon at Florence United Methodist Church with Pastor Bill Dyar officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Florence.
Darcy McCoy was the vocalist and Helen Wenta the organist. Casket bearers were Dana McCoy, Art Neely, Terry Louis, Mike Louis, Mitch Louis, and Mark Louis. Memorial funds have been established at the church and with the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
Born Oct 25, 1912, near Florence, he was the son of Alexander and Anna (Blackburn) Louis. He spent his entire lifetime in the Florence community. A farmer, he was a member of Kansas Farm Bureau. He also was a member of Florence United Methodist Church. On April 17, 1937, he was married to Jean Williams at Sedgwick. The couple had two children, Don and Carol. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Florence; son, Don, Denton, Texas; daughter, Carol Kutz, El Dorado; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

2003 OBITUARY: Laurence Gilbert Louis. He was born November 10, 1918 in Florence, Kansas. He worked on his uncles farm while he was in school and in June 1940 he joined the Navy. He was Chief Gunners Mate on the USS Houston, which was sunk by the Japanese on March 1, 1942 in the battle of the Java Sea. He was plucked from the sea by the enemy and was interred in Burma where he was forced to work on the railroad that was part of the Bridge over the River Kawai. He was held as a Japanese prisoner of war until August, 1945. He returned to Kansas on leave and in October 1945 he married Doris Lewis. He stayed in the Navy and was an instructor in Great Lakes, Illinois. In 1950 he was assigned to the USS Helena and was one of the first ships in battle in the Korean War. He received a meritorious service award for his service in the Korean War. He retired from the Navy in 1960 and was a successful real estate broker in California for many years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Louis; his daughter and son-in-law Gwendolyn and Steven Kerber; and his grand daughter and her husband Christine and Tony Knutson. He will be buried at Tahoma National Cemetery with full military honors on December 17, 2003.

2004 OBITUARY: Jean Louis, 87, of Florence, died Thursday, July 22, 2004. Services are 2 pm Saturday at the Florence United Methodist Church with Rev Bill Dyer officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence. Visitation is tonight from 6:30-8 pm at Zeiner Funeral Home in Florence.

2005 OBITUARY: Mary Virginia Van Buren Wagner, d/o Boniface David and Dollie Marie (Louis) Van Buren. She married Francis D. "Butch" Wagner Sr., on May 30, 1938. He died Nov. 24, 1961. She married Albert H. Groke S., on June 5, 1965. He died Dec 16, 1988. Mrs Wagner was a retired chemistry lab assistant at Sterling Drug Inc, having lived in McPherson since 1946. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Francis D Wagner Sr and Albert H Groke Sr; a son, Philip K Wagner; a step-son, Francis D Wagner Jr; an infant brother, George Leo Van Buren; and a great-grandson, Blake Stanley.

James Ellis Smouse was born Dec 3, 1914, in Lutzville, PA, the son of Charles W and Kathryn C Mass Smouse. He was raised and educated in Bedford County, Snake Spring Township, PA, graduating from Bedford High School. On March 18, 1942, he was united in marriage to Melba D Louis in Florence, KS. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a sergeant with the 358th GS Engineers in the Eastern Theatre of operations and received five campaign stars. Following his discharge he began his career with the United States Postal Service, serving as postmaster of the LeGrand Post Office from 1968 until his retirement on October 6, 1979. James was very active in his community, which included LeGrand Friends Church, LeGrand Senior Citizens and the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Polar Star Lodge #113 serving as secretary, Marshall Lodge #108 AF & AM, Signet Chapter #38, King Solomon Council #20 R & SM, St. Aldemar Commandry #30 K.T., Knights York Cross of Honor, Yorkrite College #37, and Marshalltown High-12 Club #617.
James is survived by his son Larry J Smouse of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; and his family of neighbors Frank (Audrey) Hartzler of Marshalltown, and Myrna Shope and Allan (Carol) Eddy, all of LeGrand. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Melba in 1998; three brothers Charles, William and Harry; and three sisters Mildred Lehman, Ruth Schnurr and Kathryn Van Horn.

They moved to Abilene in March 1942 where she was the office manager for Ronald Rice Motors, before retiring in 1977. Marguerite was the treasurer for the Abilene Country Club for many years. She was a member of the original Chapter of Beta Sigma Pi for over 60 years and also belonged to the ladies Literary League in Abilene and also the book club and bridge club. Marguerite was an avid golfer and counted her hole-in-one as a major life accomplishment.
Survivors include: sisters, Betty Varner of San Bruno, Calif., and Patricia Starkel of El Dorado; brother, Fred Van Buren of Sammamish, Wash.; one niece; and numerous nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Glenn; sister, Virginia Wagner; and brother, George Van Buren.

2012 OBITUARY: Donald Ray Louis, 73, died in Denton, Denton County, Texas, on December 7, 2012. He was born to Wilbur Orville and Roberta Jean (Williams) Louis of Newton, Harvey County, Kansas on August 3, 1939. He received his bachelor's degree from Emporia (Kansas) State University, his master's degree from West Texas State University, and his doctorate from North Texas State University. He had worked in agriculture supply sales around Plainview, Texas, prior to moving to Fort Worth then on to Denton prior to becoming a grant writer for the University of North Texas. In his later years, Don developed a great interest in Old West history, primarily in the area of Tombstone, Arizona. He will be long remembered for his efforts to raise funding for historic preservation in the area and as an encouraging voice to a generation of historians and researchers. He will be sadly missed. Don is survived by four sons, a sister, two nieces, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Don is also survived by two former spouses.
