HER BIOGRAPHY: Parents: John and Nancy (Cahill) Vaughn; married abt 1778 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., New Jersey. He was in the Rev War, as a private. They moved to Westmorland Co, Pennsylvania. Only the mother is listed as living in KY at a later time. Siblings include a twin, Nancy Vaughn Garriott, married to Simeon Garriott, Rebecca's husband's brother. All descending cousins are double cousins from these two families. The family is referenced in her brother's memoirs: Memoirs of Rev William Vaughn, DD by his son Thos M. Vaughan, 1878.

BIOGRAPHY: William G Garriott, son of Ambrose S Garriott and Elizabeth Blankenbaker, was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1783. His first wife, Rebecca Vaughn (sister of Nancy Vaughn, wife of Simeon Garriott), whom he married on 22 April 1809 in Jefferson County, KY, died in 1827. He moved from Jefferson County, KY with his father Ambrose and brother Simeon to Washington County, IN, about 1812 or 1816. He settled on Section 26 of Gibson Township on land purchased from the Government and, in 1821, helped build the first horse-powered corn gristmill in the township. William was elected/appointed a Justice of the Peace (at 39 years old) in Washington County in 1822.

1853 FAMILY FARM SOLD: [Wash Co, IN, Deed Bk Y/235, dated 21 Mar 1853] This endenture made the twenty first day of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty three Between William Garriott and Dicy Garriott his wife of the County of Washington And the State of Indiana of the one part and Ambrose A Garriott of the County and State aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said William Garriott for and in consideration of the sum of fifteen hundred dollars to him in hand paid by the said Ambrose A Garriott the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained sold conveyed and confirmed and doth ty these presents grant bargain sell convey and confirm unto the said Ambrose A Garriott his heirs and assigns forever.......
A certain tract or parcel of land in the County of Washington aforesaid it being ___ A part of the [NW4 S24 T2S R4E] containing one hundred and forty seven acres be the same more or less Together with all appurtenances thereunto belonging and the reversions [?] remainders and profits there of and all the estate title and interest of the said William Garriott in and to the same.
To have and to hold the premises aforesaid with all the appurtenances to the only proper use and benefit and behalf of the said Ambrose A Garriott his heirs and assigns forever. And the said William Garriott for himself his heirs executors and administrators both covenant and agree to and with the said Ambrose A Garriott his heirs and assigns that the said William Garriot is lawfully ___ in fee of the premises aforesaid that they are free from all incumberances and that he has good right to sell and convey the same in ___ and
former aforesaid and further that he and his heirs executors and administrators shall and will warrant and defend the said premises to the said Ambrose A Garriott, his heirs and assigns against the lawful claims of himself and his heirs and also against the lawful claim or claims of all and every other person or persons whatsoever. And the said Dicy Garriott the wife of the said William Garriott doth hereby relinquish all her right and title of dower of and in the premises aforesaid.
In witness whereof the said William Garriott and Dicy Garriott his wife have hereunto set there hands and seals the day and year above written. Signed by William Garriott and Dicy Garriott, his wife.
1863 DEATH: William Garriott died on 26 May 1863 at Spurgeon Hill. He and both wives are buried in unmarked graves in a field [then a woods] in Elk Creek Valley, north of Harristown. 7 A large stone marker (above) erected by descendants in 1917 is located about 3/8 of a mile northwest of the Mt Carmel Cemetery in Gibson Township.39
